Introduction to Proof: Reasoning in Geometry

Deductive Reasoning

Sometimes, we use all available facts and principles to reach a specific conclusion. In such a process, we may apply definitions, general statements, and already proven theorems. Such a method is called deductive reasoning.

For example, it is proven that in an isosceles triangle, two of the medians are congruent. This is a general statement and we can apply it to any specific isosceles triangle such as ABC. That is, using this general statement, we can conclude that two of the medians in isosceles triangle ABC are congruent.

Describe an example of how deductive reasoning could apply to finding the absolute value of a number. solution
