Tortilla Española

A very popular Spanish dish is the tortilla española. You may think a tortilla is like the ones you find in Mexican food, but this tortilla is very different. See if you might like to make one to sample. They really are very tasty.

Ingredients for la tortilla española
4 medium sized potatoes of a good variety for frying
4 eggs
Half an onion (medium size), finely chopped
Extra virgin olive oil
Salt (about a teaspoon, but it would depend on your taste and the amount of onion you use)

Peel the potatoes and slice them in slices about 1/4 inch thick. Put them in a bowl with the chopped onion and salt. Fry them in a pan with the olive oil. Be sure not to use too much oil or your potatoes will be crispy. The tortilla española should have soft potatoes. After about 15-20 minutes of frying, you are ready to beat the eggs lightly in a bowl and then put them in the pan with the potatoes. Let the eggs cook. Once the eggs are relatively firm, you will flip it and it will be like a thick omelet with potatoes.

La comida española

There are some things that are pretty common in all of Spain. A typical dish is called paella, a rice dish seasoned with the spice saffron. Seafood and olives—almost always with the pit still in them—are also popular. One of the favorite places for Spaniards to go out to eat dinner is a tapas bar. Tapas are small portions of food which everyone at a table shares, similar to what we might think of as appetizers. In Spain, however, these tapas can serve as a snack or as a full meal.
