Speaking Assignment: La Cucaracha

How do you think your Spanish pronunciation is coming along? Some activities you can do to practice pronunciation in Spanish all of the time are to listen to TV or radio in Spanish; look for or ask your teacher for recommendations of popular music singers in Spanish and listen to their music; find a native speaker in your area and practice what you know with them.

Another way to help your pronunciation skills is to memorize a song! La Cucaracha is a well known Mexican folk song. You can see the meaning below. Click on the title to hear the song. You will be asked to record it and send it to your teacher, either spoken or sung—that is up to you!

La Cucaracha

Song

Translation

La cucaracha, la cucaracha,
Ya no puede caminar,
Porque no tiene,
Porque le falta,
Una pata para andar

The cockroach, the cockroach
No longer can go,
Because it doesn’t have,
Because it’s missing,
A foot in order to walk.

Explanation: Cockroach was the popular name of Pancho Villa's train. The fact that the "cockroach" is missing a foot, refers to the fact that one of the wheels has fallen off the train and it can’t proceed until it’s repaired.
