Toshukai Sharaku (active 1794-1795)
Sharaku is one of the most famous Ukiyo-e artists in Japan along with great masters like Utamaro and Hokusai. But very little is known about Sharaku’s life. Sharaku made his appearance in the Ukiyo-e making scene in May 1794, and produced some 140 woodblock prints within only ten months. Then he disappeared suddenly. Nearly all Sharaku prints show Kabuki actors and a few are Sumo wrestlers. His best known works are closeups of actors. The funny facial expressions that truly reflected the actors moods are well-captured in his prints.
