Kitagawa Utamaro

Do you remember anything about Katsushika Hokusai in Section One? If you do not, you are encouraged to go back and look over that. In Section Two, we are going to look at another Ukiyo-e artist. Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806), he is famous for “bijinga”, or pictures of beautiful women. The original name of Utamaro is Ichitaro Kitagawa. It is generally agreed that he started his career as a pupil of the painter Toriyama Sekien. Around 1781, he changed his name to Kitagawa Utamaro. A few years later, he started a successful cooperation with the publisher Tsutaya Juzaburo. Together they published several books of illustrations. The early works of Utamaro were influenced by Torii Kiyonaga and Harunobu. Since 1791, Utamaro concentrated his work on single portraits of women of the Yoshiwara district. Utamaro received wide spread fame from his prints of women. But, in 1804, Utamaro ran into legal trouble by publishing prints related to a banned historical novel, Hideyoshi and 5 Concubines. He was accused of insulting military ruler Hideyoshi’s dignity and was sentenced to be handcuffed for 50 days. This experience crushed him emotionally and ended his career as an artist.
