In ancient times, the Silk Road served as a major traffic route between Asia and Europe, linking the civilizations of these regions, transporting people and goods and creating new cultures. Elements of Japanese culture were originally introduced through the Silk Road. Nara was the eastern terminus of the route.
Buddhism was perhaps one of the biggest influences brought through the road. Shosoin Treasure Repository of Nara contains artwork from the 8th century Nara period such as jewelry, glasswork, musical instruments, silverware, writing instruments and other artifacts related to the Silk Road.
