Family celebration: 七五三
Can you recognize this kanji word, 七五三 Do you know the meaning and reading? It means 'seven-five-three' and reads '‘しちごさん.’ 七五三 is a festival for children of 3, 5 and 7 years of age, observed on November 15th of every year. On this day, the children dress in kimono and go to a shrine with their family members to pray for their continued health and well-being. It was originally believed that children of these particular ages were especially prone to bad luck. The Shinto blessing and prayers were thus thought to provide divine protection for children at the critical points in their formative years.
