My Own Family vs. Someone Else's Family

There is another set of family vocabulary that is used when you talk about someone else's family. The words actually sound more polite.

Within one's family, the expressions with the arrow « are used to address senior members. First names are used only toward younger members.

Talk about Other People's Family

When Alicia introduced us to her family, she used "あね," "あに," ”おとうと” or ”いもうと.” Now Alice's friend is asking Alicia's family politely. Answer the following questions. Click on the question to see a possible correct response.

Month and Date

Let's review talking about the month and date in this activity.

It's April 11th.	しがつ　じゅういちにち　です。
It's May 15th.	ごがつ　じゅうごにち　です。
It's September 16th.	くがつ　じゅうろくにち　です。
It's December 27th.	じゅうにがつ　にじゅうななにち　です。

In Japanese, number + がつexpresses the month. To say the date, we use number + にち. There are exceptions for the first through the tenth day, the fourteenth, the twentieth, and the twenty fourth.
