Steroids
Anabolic-androgenic steroids are the most controversial and the most abused form of steroids. The term anabolic refers to muscle development, and androgenic refers to the increase in male sex characteristics. These steroids are synthetic substances that are similar to the male sex hormone, testosterone. As you know, testosterone is what produces secondary sex characteristics in males, including muscle development, facial hair, and sex drive. The use of anabolic steroids results in increased muscle development and strength, and is medically used for recovery of damaged muscle tissue. Anabolic steroids are also used to build muscle and strength in patients with AIDS or diseases which affect body mass and strength.
The illegal use and abuse of steroids, though having the effect of increasing muscle size and strength, have significant negative consequences ranging such as severe acne, cancer, heart failure, and death. Though the incidence of teen steroid abuse is high in athletes, this drug is illegal and deadly and should be avoided.
