Transformations: Translations and Reflections

Reflections

The second transformation we will look at is a reflection.

Similar to a translation, a reflection does not change the size of an object, but it does change its location and orientation.  Let’s look at a couple.

Curved arrow reflected through a vertical line
Reflection through a vertical line

Notice the dark blue curved arrow is reflected through the vertical line.  The image is the same size and shape, but is oriented differently.  The images are the same distance away from the line of reflection.

Images can be reflected through vertical lines, horizontal lines, and diagonal lines, and even through just one point.

Curved arrow reflected through a horizontal line, heart reflected through a diagonal line
Reflection through a horizontal line, a diagonal line, and a point

Notice in each reflection through a line (vertical, horizontal, diagonal), the line of reflection is perpendicular to the line connecting the image's corresponding parts.
