Project AssignmentLe projet
In this Unit, your project is going to be fun and interesting. You are to choose a country--you can choose any countries where French is spoken. You will do a research project on that country's foods and beverages. In your research, you will need to find pictures of at least four typically eaten foods in that country, and at least two beverages. Find a recipe for at least one of the foods and prepare it. You will need to have a finished product of at least 200 words in English. The project will have four deadlines:

  1. Deadline 1: Country idea --what country do you choose? (5 points)
  2. Deadline 2: Outline (5 points)
  3. Deadline 3: Rough draft (5 points)
  4. Deadline 4: Final project: (25 points)

The second deadline is due now. This assignment is worth 5 points.

Key ConceptLe partitif
Look at the sentences here to see if you can determine a pattern.

Piece of Cake
Whole Cake
Je mange du gateau. (I'm eating some cake.)
Je mange le gateau. (I'm eating the whole cake.)
Piece of chicken
Whole Chicken
Je mange du poulet. (I'm eating some chicken.)
Je mange le poulet. (I'm eating the whole chicken.

In French, if you are going to talk about a part of some whole thing, you must use what we call the partitive (part of something) article. This article is used quite a bit with foods, as you see above in the examples. Here are the other forms of it:

Je mange de la salade.

Je mange des cerises.

Je mange du poulet.

Sometimes in English we might leave this out of our sentence, saying, "I'm eating salad." In any case, we must use the article in French. It is not optional. Sometimes in English we might translate the partitive article as "some" or "any."
