Module 1 Section 4

Examining Themes: Building Close Reading Skills

NOW: Look for relationship among the things.

In the image of the painting above, you can see that some of the significant items you identified are circled. Now you can begin to make judgements:

  • How do the things you have identified, especially the important ones, seem to relate to one another?
  • Do you see any patterns?
  • What about the painting doesn't make sense? Examine those areas closely!

Click and Check: Here are some of the relationships and patterns you may have noticed.

  1. The legs in the water seem to have no relation to anything else in the picture. From the angle, they could not have come from the shore or the boat. It looks as if they fell from the sky, out of the picture.
  2. Why are there feathers around the legs? Did they fall with the legs?
  3. The ship is sailing away from the legs.
  4. The shepherd is looking up in the sky, away from the water.
  5. The man is pointing to some unknown place in the water.
  6. The plowman is looking down intently at his plow.
