Introduction to Literary Elements and Devices: Overview
All works of literature, regardless of genre, length, or style, contain what are known as literary elements. Literary elements are the “essential qualities” of any work of literature, and include plot, characters, theme, language, narrator, point of view, mood, setting, and conflict. Additionally, writers use literary devices, which are tools that help an author enhance their writing and create interest for the reader or audience. Literary devices include metaphor, simile, imagery, symbolism, foreshadowing, allegory, motif, and many more! In this class, we will learn about both literary elements and literary devices.
