Editing
Another key player in the filmmaking process is the film editor. Occasionally working in conjunction with the director, the film editor is responsible for assembling the final visual piece. He or she will “cut” the film, now done digitally, and reassemble it in a logical order.
There are numerous editing techniques that can be utilized. The editor can create continuity, or smooth transitions from one scene to the next, or more abrupt transitions through the use of jump cuts. These cuts are quite obtrusive and transition from one scene back to another.
Cross-cutting is another method of cutting back and forth between two scenes, but both scenes parallel each other. The dissolve looks as if one scene dissolves and another gradually appears. One other editing technique is the fade to black, in which the screen goes to black for a moment before a new scene appears.
