Film as an Art
Making a film, or television show, is an art. A director is equivalent to an artist—he or she has a vision or idea he or she wants to convey. Various technical elements can be manipulated to achieve that goal, which will be explored further in this unit.
In addition, each director has a belief system that is also conveyed through his or her art. For example, in a criminal investigation show, the director might portray a thief who steals from a rich corporate executive and gives to a poor family as a hero to convey their belief that modern-day corporations are taking advantage of the working class.
As you continue to watch films and television shows, attempt to identify the director’s message.
