Photography: Camera Shots

A shot is a continuous take, one that may contain a series of frames, without editing. Within these shots, directors determine how many objects or characters to place in the frame and at what distance. There are several common shots used when filming:

  • Close-up shot: Usually of a face; the closer the shot, the more emotionally charged
  • Medium shot: Shot of character(s) from the waist up; can include 1-3 characters; medium shot can also be done over-the-shoulder of one character looking at another
  • Long shot: Shot taken from a distance that may contain several figures at one time
  • Establishing shot: A panoramic view from a distance that establishes the setting; also known as an extreme long shot
