Movement

In both film and television, there is movement of characters and movement of the camera. Characters in sitcoms often utilize exaggerated and stylized movement, similar to Broadway shows. For example, in "Seinfeld", Jerry and even Kramer often move their arms about wildly to stir up laughter. On the other hand, in dramas, you will usually see the actors utilize a more natural movement to make the show seem realistic.

Along with the actors, cameras also move. In a film, when the actors are walking or running, a camera is placed on a dolly or track to provide smooth movement as it follows the character. It can also be placed on a crane to provide aerial views. There are also occasions when the director will want you, the viewer, to feel as if you are walking alongside the character in the film. In this situation, a cameraman will actually carry the camera, giving a jerking feeling. This is quite effective in horror films when the director wants it to appear as if you are also running from the frightening scene.
