Read Chapter 13, Voting Elections, pp 444-491 in your text before completing the rest of this section. The section activities will require that you are able to readily access the information.

For this first reading assignment you should be able to:

• Compare and contrast three critical elections in the development of American government.
• Understand that not all laws originate with elected officials.
• Describer the function of elections in the American political process.
