People and Politics: Campaigns, Elections and Voting

The Convention Send Off

The winner at the convention is a foregone conclusion. Delegates arrive knowing that the party’s candidate is already chosen. Although that lack drama, the conventions are a media event for the parties where they orchestrate a massive send-off for their candidates. The party’s leaders rally the delegates and party members watching from home around the nominee.

The 2008 Democratic National Convention was held in Denver, Colorado from August 25 to August 28, 2008. Here, Obama was nominated by the Democratic Party to run for the Presidency. Obama took 2201 total delegates, 1763 pledged and 438 superdelegates against Clinton’s total of 1896.
