Range

Gifted, creative songwriters find a way to craft melodies that catch our attention and hold it. However, songwriting is a series of decisions about pitch, duration, harmony, and many other elements of music. When lyrics or words are added, the decisions become even more complex because of the literal and poetic use of words.
Musical range refers to the distance between the highest note of a song and the lowest note of a song. Often when people try to sing the "Star Spangled Banner" they become aware of the very large range required to sing this piece.
