Suicide Prevention: What Can You Do For a Friend?

Most people who commit or attempt suicide have given some type of warning to loved ones ahead of time. As a friend, it is important to be aware of some options for helping someone who is suicidal.
If you have concerns about someone who talks about suicide:
- Stay with the person. Initiate a conversation and show concern.
- Ask questions to find out if they are thinking about making a suicide attempt.
- Encourage them to talk further and help them to find appropriate counseling assistance.
- Encourage the person to develop a personal safety plan. This can include time spent with others, check-in points with significant adults, plans for the future.
