culture -reading Musashi Miyamoto (1584-1645)

Musashi Miyamoto was a famous Japanese swordsman. He is believed to have been one of the most skilled swordsmen in history. Musashi, as he is often simply known, became legendary through his outstanding swordsmanship in numerous duels, even from a very young age. He is the founder of the Hyoho Niten Ichi-ryu, or Nito Ryu style of swordsmanship and wrote Go Rin No Sho, The Book of Five Rings, a book on strategy, tactics, and philosophy still studied by martial artists, businesspeople, and others even today.

Musashi Miyamoto In the Book of Five Rings, there are many principles, techniques, and strategies that Musashi presents in describing his Ni Ten Ichi Ryu school and how to attain the Way of strategy. Some of the most well known are the general guiding rules at the end of the Ground section of Musashi's book. These include:

  1. Do not think dishonestly.
  2. The Way is in training.
  3. Become acquainted with every art.
  4. Know the Ways of all professions.
  5. Distinguish between gain and loss in worldly matters.
  6. Develop an intuitive judgement and understanding for everything.
  7. Perceive those things which cannot be seen.
  8. Pay attention even to trifles.
  9. Do nothing which is of no use.

There have been thirty six films made about Musashi, including six with the title of "Miyamoto Musashi," and a television series about his life. Even in Musashi's time there were fictional texts about him resembling comic books. It is therefore quite difficult to separate fact from fiction when discussing Musashi. Eiji Yoshikawa's novelization has greatly influenced successive fictional depictions and is often mistaken for a factual account of Musashi's life. The video games "Brave Fencer Musashi" and "Samurai Legend Musashi" are based on Musashi, and the characters in the games wield a katana and a larger sword as well.
