Psychologists must consider the treatment of their subjects when conducting research. The American Psychological Association (APA) has established a code of ethics for research in psychology.

They urge researchers to:

  1. Obtain the informed consent of participants.
  2. Protect participants from harm and discomfort.
  3. Treat information about individual participants with confidentiality.
  4. Explain the research after the study is completed.
