DoDEA Arts Standards and the National Core Arts
Standards (NCAS)
Current DoDEA Arts Standards exist (independently) for visual arts and music. Current DoDEA standards speci-
fy what students should know and be able to do in three areas:
Current DoDEA Arts Standards incorporate philosophical foundations and lifelong goals. The NCAS are
reimaged from the 1994 National Standards for Arts Education – reimaged from the DoDEA standards. The
structure of the NCAS are learning events, progressing across grades and levels to create a sequential, and
standards-based approach to PreK-12 arts education across arts disciplines.
1) Knowledge and skills,
2) Correct use of tools
3) Experimentation in a variety of mediums
DoDEA 1990s Art Standards
NCAS:
DoDEA standards are for ALL students PK-12.
The NCAS are for ALL students and provide an arts
education paralleled across five arts disciplines that
reflect the interconnected nature of the arts as
practiced and experienced in the real world
Two separate sets of DoDEA standards: 1994 Nation-
al Standards for Arts Education and the 1994 Nation-
al Standards For Music Education.
DoDEA has never adopted standards for the-
ater arts.
NCAS focus on the following four processes:
1) Creating
2) Performing/presenting/producing
3) Reflecting
4) Connecting
