The Aftermath

With the nation’s capital basically a pit of ashes and a treasury nearly depleted, it was as if the United States had to start again. In December 1814, a group of New Englanders sent delegates to a meeting in Hartford, Connecticut. The New England settlers, who relied greatly on trade as their main source of income, had been affected by the British blockade that had essentially ended trade for the nation. The purpose of the meeting was to decide if the settlers should leave the nation in pursuit of a better life. The meeting, which became known as the Hartford Convention, resulted in a series of constitutional amendments.
