Notable Victories (continued)

The greatest victory for the United States would come after the treaty had already been signed to end the war. On January 8, 1815, at the Battle of New Orleans, 5,300 British soldiers trying to seize control of the city were defeated by 4,700 American troops. Though the war was over, the battle was still significant in helping to make Andrew Jackson a war hero.

Battle of New Orleans

ChesapeakeA year before, the U.S.S. Chesapeake was captured off the coast of Massachusetts. Although deemed somewhat successful given their size and strength, the American navy was unable to compete against the British in terms of sea power. Eventually the British would have a devastating impact on their efforts as well as trade.
