You are probably beginning to make lots of word associations in Spanish. The words in this Unit - abierto and cerrado - may be easily associated with "open" and "closed" because you can see the roots "abrir" and "cerrar" in them. This happens quite a bit in Spanish and as you learn other vocabulary you can begin to even make up your own "new" words based on the patterns like this that you have seen.

Here are some others you have had:

  • Cansado
  • Aburrido
  • Irritado

Do you know what those adjectives initially looked like?

  • cansar
  • aburrir
  • irritar

Can you see the pattern? You can take off the ending of the infinitive and add "-ado" to the stem of –AR verbs and "-ido" to the stem of –ER and –IR verbs. The result can be used as an adjective - like cansado. Obviously some, like abierto, do not follow the regular pattern. See if you can do these. Make the adjective based on what the verb is.

unir
confundir
esconder
desaparecer

Obviously, since these are adjectives, if you are talking about a feminine noun, you would use the feminine form. And, if they are plural, naturally, they must also be made plural.
