Ir de Compras: Introduction

Bazar del Sábado

In Mexico City, you can hacer compras at the Bazar del Sábado if you are available to shop on a Saturday. This market is open on Saturdays, as the name implies, and specializes in hand-crafted artesanías from all over Mexico. This market is renowned for its ambiance and the quality of the products brought to be sold at the market. One can expect to find anything from paintings to silver jewelry to pottery here. When weather permits, the market is both outside, as you see in the picture, and inside a building.

Every Saturday in the small Ecuadorian village of Otavalo, vendors come from all around to sell their artesanías and other items at a huge market which covers the greater part of this little city. You can see a view of part of the market in the above picture. The market is an open-air market where you can be expected to bargain for what you are going to purchase.

Woven goods are a highlight of the market, as they are a typical product made by the local artisans. Leather wares are another local specialty. All kinds of items, though, can be seen and purchased at this market - even live pigs and chickens!
