Cumpleaños: Introduction

Quinceañera

Hispanics have a beautiful tradition for young girls when they turn 15 (quince años--quinceañera). This is the year that an extravagant and elegant celebration is planned in honor of this girl becoming a young lady.

Invitations are printed and sent out, special clothing is selected for the big event, food is planned out and prepared. Many times the celebration is in a hotel or a special location where there can be a band and dancing for the family and friends of this special young lady.

As you see in picture, the special girl who is turning 15 is quite a princess for this special occasion. She generally wears a pale pink or white dress and has a wonderful evening to remember for all time. You may want to do more research about this beautiful Hispanic custom as you prepare your journal about birthdays in this unit.

El Día Del Santo
Hispanics generally celebrate a day they call their "Saint's Day." The "Día del Santo" is the day that the Catholic church honors a specific saint. Hispanics celebrate their Saint's day on the day of the Saint that they share a name with. You can go to ACI Prensa or Saint of the Day - Calendar to look to see what your "Saint's" day is.

On this day in some countries, the individual is even honored with a second party with gifts. See if you can find your Saint's day (or one close to your name).
