Remember that to add the minutes to an hour, if it is up to the thirty-minute mark, we simply say the number of minutes with the counter ふん/ぷん/ぶん(分)depending on what number precedes the counter.
Beyond the thirty-minute mark, there are two ways to express the minutes. You can use the entire number PAST the hour, or you can go to the next closest hour and subtract the minutes away from that hour (and add “before” or まえ・前 after the minutes. See the examples given below.
3:40 AM
さんじよんじゅっぷんです。(三時四十分です。)Forty minutes (past) 3:00.
よじにじゅっぷんまえです。(四時二十分前です。)Twenty minutes BEFORE 4:00.

Subway ちかてつ(地下鉄)
The subway is an effective and inexpensive way to get around in large cities. There are some basics to learn to get around on the subway if you are going to use them and you’re not familiar with them. Let's look at the Tokyo subway system first.
Click here to open the link to a map of the Tokyo Subway System. From this view, you can see all of the lines of the subway, though not in their entirety. You will see many lines in the subway system including Tokyo Metro lines and private Toei lines. You can change to other subway lines only at stations that have intersecting lines.
Zoom in on the map onto the Marunouchi Line 丸の内線 (red line). Imagine that you are staying near the Tokyo Station 東京駅 and you want to go to Shinjuku 新宿, the heart of the city. There are many ways to get to Shinjuku. You can go by JR (Japan Railways) Yamanote Line 山手線 or Marunouchi Line or other ways.
As an example, if you take Marunouchi Line you will get on the subway at Tokyo station. But there are two directions. Which direction should you go? Should you go toward Shinjuku or toward Ikebukuro 池袋? Assume you take the subway that goes toward Shinjuku. Each dot represents a station where the subway stops and people can get off or on. How many stops would you have to take to get off there?
At Shinjuku, you will have two options--you can either walk to the west side to Tokyo Metropolitan City Hall or you can go to the east side to shopping district (Isetan department store, Mitsukoshi, department stores, Kinokuniya bookstore etc.) It’s important to know which exit is most convenient for exact destination once you arrive at the subway station.
After the shopping you decide to go to Asakusa 浅草. What direction will you want to go on the Toei Shinjyuku Line (green line)? You get off at Higashi Nihonbashi 東日本橋 and transfer to Toei Asakusa Line (pink line). And how many stops will you go to arrive there? At Asakusa, you can visit the Sensoji Temple 浅草寺お寺and stroll around Nakamise 仲見世looking for souvenirs お宮城 to take home.
