Culture Invitations

If you were in Japan and making plans to do something with a friend, you most likely would not be depending on your own vehicles to get where you are going. Remember that in Japan, teenagers are not allowed to drive until the age of eighteen. You would have to rely on public transportation or .....walk.

When you invite others to do something, they respond, either accepting or declining the invitation. There are many expressions you can use to accept or decline an invitation. You learned to say “ええ、いいですよ” in Section Two of this unit. That is one term you can use to accept an invitation. Here are some others.

いっしょに えいがに いきませんか。 はい、いいですよ。
いっしょに テニスを しませんか。 ええ、そうしましょう。
土よう日に いっしょに コンサートに いきませんか。 いいですね。いきましょう。

Now, to decline an invitation, you may want to not only decline the invitation but also offer some excuse as to why you are not accepting. Here are some expressions you will want to use.

いっしょに えいがに いきませんか。 すみません、ちょっと。
あした いっしょに スキーに いきませんか。 すみません、あしたは ようじが あるんです。
いっしょに さんぽを しませんか。 すみません、今 いそがしいんです。

As the expressions above show, んです is used to provide some explanations. It follows the plain form of verbs and adjectives.
