Decisions: Abstinence
Choosing to abstain from sex can protect you against many negative consequences. What are the benefits of abstaining from sexual activity as a high school student? Consider this, then answer the following:

- Unwanted pregnancy
- Single parenthood
- Sexually transmitted diseases
Making choices about whether or not to engage in sexual activity should involve an examination of your goals and priorities. Consider the following when making this decision:

What is a benefit of abstaining from sexual activity as a student?
- Establish your priorities: What are your goals and dreams? How will your choice potentially change these?
- Set limits on how you want to express affection: How comfortable do you feel expressing your affection? Does it match your goals and your values? Set limits that don't ask you to go beyond your comfort level.
- Talk with your partner. A sign of a responsible and mature relationship is the ability to talk openly about hopes and fears. Make sure you talk all choices through with a partner who is willing to talk openly in return.
- Talk with your family or a trusted adult. Getting advice from someone who has "been there" can be invaluable.
- Avoid illegal drugs and alcohol. These impair judgment and might cause you to compromise your values at a time when you are vulnerable.
