Introduction to Contraception: Introduction
Contraception provides a variety of methods for preventing pregnancy and protecting against sexually transmitted diseases. In this section we will discuss three methods of contraception.

- The Barrier Method, which prevents sperm from meeting the egg.
- The Hormonal Method, which creates changes in the body to alter normal bodily functions, preventing ovulation or implantation of a fertilized egg.
- The Surgical Method, which separates vital passages needed for pregnancy to occur.

Human sexuality, its consequences, and the decisions associated with it are always sensitive and controversial. The decision to plan when to reproduce, or if one will reproduce, is linked to many decisions we make, including the decision to become sexually active. These decisions have personal, societal, and (for many) religious implications.
It is not the intent of this course to advocate any particular perspective, but merely to make sure that all of the information is available to you so that you make the decisions that are consistent with your own goals, values, and beliefs. That is why you need to talk about these sensitive subjects with your parents, counselor, doctor, and/or spiritual advisor. There are several choices available to prevent pregnancy, if you have decided that you are not ready to be a parent.
