Secant Lines and Line Segments

We just learned about line segments that connect two points on a circle.  These line segments are called chords.  If the segments are extended beyond the circle, they are called secants.

A secant is a line or line segment that passes through a circle in two points.


Take a look at the circle below.

Notice that lines AB, PQ, and XY all pass through two points on the circle. All three of these lines are called secant lines.
