key conceptNotre/Votre
We can talk about "my" things and "your" things and "his/her" things. Now let's talk about "our" things and "your (familiar plural) " things.

Marc et moi, nous avons un frère. Notre frère s'appelle Jacques.
Marc et moi, nous avons une soeur. Notre soeur s'appelle Marie.
Marc et moi, nous avons des livres. Nos livres sont intéressants.
Marc et moi, nous avons des calculatrices. Nos calculatrices sont nouvelles.

We use " notre" or " nos" to say ours.

We use " votre," or " vos" to say your (plural or formal singular).

Writing PracticePractice here saying that these family members belong to us.

les cousins
les grand-parents
les tantes
le frère
la soeur
la famille
les parents

Remember that you determine the gender and number of these possessive adjectives based on the noun they describe, not on the person who has possession of the object.

Now, tell your French teacher that these things belong to him or her, saying these are "your" family members.

les cousins
les grand-parents
les tantes
le frère
la soeur
la famille
les parents

Key ConceptLeur/Leurs
Now that we can talk about anybody else's things, let's talk about "theirs." Read the following sentences to see how we can talk about "their" things.

Annie et Pierre ont une grand-mère. Leur grand-mère s'appelle Sophie.

Paul et Jean font leurs devoirs.

We use leur to say "their" when the item that follows is singular and we use leurs when the item that follows is plural. With that in mind, say that these items are "theirs" now.

les cousins
les grand-parents
les tantes
le frère
la soeur
la famille
les parents
