Avatar: The Effects of Floods and Their Risks
You are looking out the window and thinking about how it has been raining for three days straight. Normally a little rain is a good thing, but things are starting to look pretty wet out there. Then the weather announcer on TV comes on to say that a flash flood warning has been issued for your town. Like the news announcer in the video clip you saw in the section warm-up, the announcer in your town tells you that the ground is so saturated that it simply cannot hold any more water, and floods are expected soon. Flash floods are especially dangerous because they happen rapidly; giving people little time to prepare for them. The TV announcer says to get somewhere high and dry as quickly as you can and to NOT drive anywhere, if possible.
What kinds of effects do you think flash floods and other floods have on people and the environment, and why is it not safe to drive during a flood? Watch the presentation to find out about the effects of floods and the risks that they pose.
