Floods: Introduction
In September 2009, during a 48-hour period, the major urban area of Atlanta, Georgia received more rain than would normally fall in a month. The excess water was more than the area’s rivers and creeks could hold. A major flood was the result. When it was over, more than $500 million of damage was done and nine lives had been lost.
Floods are America’s number one natural disaster and cause more damage than any other event. In this section you will learn about the causes and types of floods, how to be safe during a flood, and the effects that floods have on people and the landscape.
