Weathering and Soils: Soils as a Natural Resource

Specific Uses of Soils

Soils are used differently all over the world because they have different properties. Some soils are more suitable for agriculture, some for various environment services, and others for storing carbon depending on those properties.

Clay soils are especially useful under landfills because it can filter out harmful chemicals. The soil catches the chemicals as they leach (leak) out of the landfill and keep those pollutants from reaching the groundwater. In contrast, sandy soil is not good for preventing contamination because of its poor ability to absorb chemical substances.

Some properties are considered limiting factors cluetip icon for agricultural production. If soil exhibits any of these properties they would have less potential for growing food crops. After reviewing the list, roll over each factor to see an explanation of why it limits agricultural production.
