Soils as a Natural Resource: Introduction
In May 1934, a huge wind storm picked up huge amounts of topsoil from the Central United States and carried the soil east to New York and Washington, D. C. The Dust Bowl storms were sometimes called black blizzards because of the mud falling from the sky. They continued on and off for almost five years leaving behind barren fields of dust. These storms displaced thousands of families from their farms.
In this section you will learn that soil is an important natural resource and why events like the Dust Bowl storms happen, as well as why they are destructive to the environment.
