Rational Functions: Direct and Inverse Variation

Graphs of Inverse Variation Equations

The graphs of inverse variation equations are very different from direct variation equations. Using this table of values, we will graph these points and connect them in a graph.

x
y equals 1 divided by x
-3
negative 1 divided by 3
-2
negative 1 divided by 2
-1
-1
0
Undefined
1
1
2
1 divided by 2
3
1 divided by 3

Next, let’s graph these points and connect them to create a graph. Make sure to remember that at
x = 0 the equation is undefined since you can’t have a zero in the denominator.

Graph of y equal to one divided by x.
y equals one divided by x

Notice that this graph does not exist at x = 0.
