Rational Functions: Direct and Inverse Variation

Predicting Values

Using the two equations we created for direct and inverse variation, we can predict values of y given certain values of x.

For example, suppose we have the equation y = 5x. If we want to know the value of y if x = 3 then all we need to do is substitute 3 in for x in the equation y = 5x.

y = 5x
y = 5(3)
y = 15

If we use our inverse variation equation y equals 28 divided by x and want to know the value of y for x = 2, we follow the same procedure and substitute 2 in for x into the equation y equals 28 divided by x.

y equals 28 divided by x, y equals 28 divided by 2, y equals 14
