What causes you stress? The causes of stress for each person are highly individual. Some people need a lot of uninterrupted sleep or a low-responsibility job. Some "Type A" personalities seem to thrive on long work hours and little sleep or inconsistent meals. Stress can be caused by both external and internal stressors.

Some common external causes of stress:

  • Big life changes, such as moving, changing schools, or losing a loved one
  • Worries about money or basic needs
  • Challenges at work or school
  • Challenges in relationships
  • Being overly busy or always feeling “hectic”
  • Family changes or challenges

Some common internal causes of stress:

  • Negative attitudes and pessimistic views
  • Anxiety over uncertainties
  • Low self-esteem or negative self-talk
  • Perfectionism
