German university students begin right in with courses in their major area, so the first year at a German University is not like the first year or two at an American university, where students generally have courses covering a broad range of requirements. For this reason, most American study abroad programs take place during the junior year.

Some universities have their own study abroad programs with specific countries, and most allow their students to study abroad under the auspices of another university's program. Somewhat unusual is the Academic Year in Freiburg program, sponsored by a consortium of four universities: Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Iowa.
