Phase Three—Organizing a Comparison/Contrast Essay

As with all essays, the comparison/contrast essay will introduce your reader to your point, provide evidence

to support your point, and conclude with a ϐinal thought about your point. In effect, it moves from a very

general idea (in the introduction) to speciϐic evidence (in the body) and back to a less general idea (in the

conclusion). There are two distinct ways in which to structure your comparison/contrast essay:

The ϐirst is by

topic

;

the second is by

subject

.



Let’s say you have been asked to compare two sports cars. You choose to compare a Porsche and a

Corvette. These are your

subjects

.



You’ve chosen to compare them using the following: Cost, Speed, Style. These are your

topics.
