The Western Front

Churchill and Roosevelt met again in 1941, in Morocco, to once again discuss their war plans in response to the growing German menace. It was during this meeting that the two leaders declared that Germany, Japan and Italy were going to have to surrender unconditionally.

Another major victory for the Allied forces came in July of 1943. Led by General George S. Patton, American forces launched an attack against the Italians in Sicily. The successful campaign led to the defeat of Mussolini, who was forced to surrender.

German forces in Italy were not so quick to accept defeat. Instead, they continued to fight as they retreated up the Italian peninsula. Despite the overthrow of Mussolini and the surrender of Italy, Allied forces battled the Germans on the Italian peninsula for the duration of the war.
