The War Abroad

American armed forces were desperately needed abroad in both Europe and Asia. Almost immediately, American forces flowed to Britain to aid a desperate ally. Several British cities, including London had already suffered devastating damages and loss of life during the Battle of Britain.

In an effort to sustain Great Britain during the German bombings, American warships escorted merchant ships providing food and supplies to the British. However, Germany was quick to respond to these efforts by assembling large numbers of submarines known as “U-boats” that attacked the merchant ships.
