During the 1930s, Europe as well as the United States was battling through a depression. Although the United States remained true to their democratic principles, other parts of the world succumbed to dictatorships. Germany, Italy, and Japan all saw the emergence of leaders who promoted fascism, militarism, and totalitarianism.

Although most Americans had hoped to remain neutral during World War II, their choice was made for them on December 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. America was now thrust into the war and played a pivotal role. The U.S. military and booming economy paved the road for the United States to serve as a dominant force against the Germans and Japanese.
