America: A World Leader Emerges: Introduction (continued)

With men fighting abroad, women were left behind in the United States to serve in their own capacity. They assumed the roles that husbands and fathers once portrayed working in factories and defense plants. The economy had shifted from one that was geared toward consumer items to those needed for war.

Everyone did their part to help support the troops, from using ration cards to buying war bonds and young children recycling cans. Most Americans felt a sense of patriotism during the war, making any and every sacrifice to help those wearing a uniform.

Throughout the war, American forces fought in several major campaigns throughout Europe and Africa. Their victories were achieved through precise planning, training, and solid leadership. One of the biggest decisions the United States faced during this war was the decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan.
