The Election of FDR
The RFC reflected Hoover’s ideology that government should do what is necessary to support industry, which will in turn support the individual by strengthening the economy. He believed that state and local efforts, as well as charities, could support individuals with relief programs; unfortunately, those programs and charities had no funds. Hoover’s philosophy was not popular with the greater population who lived in poverty.
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt | During the election of 1932, Hoover’s Democratic opponent Franklin Delano Roosevelt promised a “new deal for the American people.” As governor of New York, he had set up relief programs to aid the poor and wanted similar programs nationwide. He wanted to change the role of government in the lives of the American people and give it greater involvement in the social welfare of people. The election of 1932 was a turning point in United States history because it altered the role of government in the lives of Americans. Franklin Delano Roosevelt took the oath of office in 1933. |
