Value in Educating Women
There was a movement during the late 1700s within the public school system pushing the ideals of patriotism and justice. Many referred to these values as “republican virtues,” stressing the ideals of sacrifice, self-reliance, industry, frugality, and harmony. It was also believed that such values should be taught to children within the home, by their mothers. As a result, society saw the importance of girls receiving a solid education, so they could pass on their values and morals to their children.
